Tesla Car LogoTesla Motors Inc is an American company founded in 2003 by Elon Musk, Martin Eberhand, Marc Tarpenning, JB Straubel and Ian Wright. There HQ is based in Pal Alto in California. They design, manufacture and sell electric cars.

Tesla’s ultimate aim is to sell electric vehicles to average customers at a price that is affordable. Tesla also sell their electric powertrain components to the likes of Daimler and Toyota, including Lithium-ion Battery Packs.

The Tesla Roadster was their first model and was the first ever production model to use a lithium-ion battery cell. It is was also the first Electric Vehicle with a range of more than 200 miles per charge.

Tesla then unveiled the Tesla Model S and all electric saloon. The battery packs are integrated into the floor of the saloon unlike the original roadster where they were placed behind the seats. Because of this, no interior space is wasted. An aluminum alloy armour plate is fitted to the underside of the Model S to prevent damage of the batteries by road debris or an impact.

Tesla will also allow its technology patents to be used by other manufacturers in good faith, this is to help with the introduction of electric cars for the mass market. Tesla will hold all IP rights such as trademarks and trade secrets, this is to help prevent direct copying of its vehicle.

The original Tesla Roadster was based on the Lotus Elise, Tesla took 2500 of these gliders which expired at the end of 2011. The acceleration of this car is just under 4 seconds from 0 to 60mph, it has a top speed of 125mph. The base price of the car in the United Kingdom was £90,000.

The Tesla S model is manufactured in Fremont, California. Tesla opened its facility their in October 2010, for European models, these are assembled in Tilburg, near Rotterdam. Components are shipped from the USA and assembled in this factory.

The Model III was announced on 14th July 2014, this car will be priced at approx. £30,000 with a range of 200 mile. It will be in the same category as the BMW 3 series, the Audi A4 and the Mercedes C Class.
